| Anotation | The upper esophageal sphincter represents an important functional structure at the junction of the digestive and respiratory tracts. Its proper function is essential for coordinating the act of swallowing and protecting the upper airway. Disorders of the upper esophageal sphincter may be associated with a wide range of symptoms and diseases of the upper respiratory and swallowing tracts, such as extraesophageal reflux. Modern diagnostic methods, such as 24-hour esophageal impedance monitoring and high-resolution manometry, allow for a detailed assessment of reflux and esophageal pressure conditions, thereby providing new possibilities for diagnosing and understanding these conditions. |
