Anotation | The Social Democrats and Communists gained a strong social status and legitimacy in the First Czechoslovak Republic. It related to the increasing weight of the working classes (democratization), the legitimacy crisis of the societal system from the Belle Époque era, and widely accepted ideas of the necessity of a welfare state. There was an impact of social tensions during the war and the first post-war years and, after a short boom, the lengthy economic crisis of the 1930s. The project analyses the depth of the socio-moral milieu, i.e. the penetration of these political movements into the whole social life in the major industrial areas of Moravia (Ostrava and Brno) and in the municipal milieu of the largest Moravian cities. The basic pillars of the penetration are seen in municipal politics, the trade union and strike movement, workers? associations, and cooperatives. Besides an analysis of left-wing actors? attitudes and actions, the project will also present the view of state authorities, which monitored activities of the left and directly intervened against radical elements. |
