AnotationThe importance of endosymbiosis for the emergence of eukaryotic cells is beyond doubt, yet it extends way beyond the ancient emergence of mitochondria and plastids. While protists were only recently shown to host a range of endosymbionts by far exceeding those encountered in insects and other multicellular eukaryotes, only few models exist to study the relationship between the unicellular eukaryotic host and its endosymbionts. Using functional genomics, removal and reintroduction of endosymbionts and a wide range of other methods, we will perform in-depth analyses of the relationships between bacteria and their host, the trypanosomatid and diplonemid flagellates. We hope that both model systems will be instrumental for the identification of new interactions governing this evolutionary and ecologically key relationship.
