AnotationAtherosclerosis is a chronic vascular disease that involves the process of accumulation of fat cells, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and others. Blood vessels become less elastic, walls thicken and blood flow is restricted, leading to cardiovascular disease. Carotid atherosclerosis is closely associated with the development of stroke. Early and high-quality diagnosis, especially with ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, is important to reduce the risk of stroke. However, each of these methods has its limitations, whether in terms of resolution, financial or technical parameters. Therefore, experimental methods such as microCT and microMR will be investigated, which will allow detailed imaging and subsequent evaluation of the individual characteristics of atherosclerotic plaques in vitro. The results from the evaluation will be compared with histology to determine the accuracy of their potential use in diagnostics. This research will allow us to define, among other things, the accuracy of the current imaging methods used.
