AnotationClimate change brings an increased frequency of droughts and heatwave episodes causing oxidative and osmotic injuries in plants. An effective mechanism of induced tolerance is essential for plant survival. We have recently shown a key role of low-molecular-weight protective compounds (LMPWCs), but the role of individual LMWPCs in induced tolerance, cross-tolerance and plant systemic response is unclear. Using appropriate mutants of A. thaliana and barley genotypes, we will focus on a comprehensive understanding of the importance of LMWPCs in induced tolerance, from the signalling role of light spectral composition, through the dynamics of induction/degradation of antioxidants, osmotics and phenols, up to the importance of acclimation on organ/whole-plant level. Metabolomics approaches, gene expression analysis, biochemical/biophysical methods of stress, and a number of morphological, anatomical and histochemical analyses will be used for this purpose.
