Courses

The aim of the course is to equip students with practical skills that will enable them to effectively acquire and master the principles of writing academic and professional texts in English. The course also aims to develop critical thinking and general academic literacy. The course focuses both on linguistic accuracy, including cohesion and coherence, and on the key principles of producing academic papers in English, specifically the formulation of research questions and hypotheses, the structure of an academic text (presentation, essay), the search for, annotation and paraphrasing of credible and appropriate academic literature, citation conventions, the issue of plagiarism, predatory practices, and the ethical use of LLM tools. As part of this component of the course, students are introduced to both the linguistic and technical principles involved in producing and presenting academic texts. An essential part of the teaching consists of joint evaluation (peer review and teacher feedback) of shorter academic written assignments submitted continuously throughout the semester (summaries, paraphrases, annotations of sources, abstracts, paragraphs, presentations) and discussion of possible solutions to linguistic, research-related and technical problems and challenges. Course 2AKP1 is part of a continuous and interconnected set of Academic Writing 1-2 courses in the Bachelor?s degree programme in English Philology.
