Annotation:
The course explores the evolution of the crime genre from its nineteenth-century roots to contemporary postcolonial and transnational narratives. Students will learn how the genre traditionally served to establish order (whether state or colonial) and how contemporary authors and filmmakers currently deconstruct and subvert that very order. Likewise, students will examine spatial and cultural themes of crime narratives across imperial centers and global peripheries. Special attention is paid to adaptation theory, media transformations (short story, novel, film, podcast), and the politics of race, class, and empire.
