AnotationExtracranial carotid artery atherosclerosis is responsible for approximately a quarter of all ischemic strokes and is considered a marker of vascular health. In addition to the degree of carotid stenosis, plaque composition appears to be an important risk factor for plaque instability leading to embolization and stroke. Ischemic stroke causes hypoxic changes in the brain tissue and their quantification allows us to determine the impairment and predict the patient's final condition after several months. The Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECT) is used for uniform quantification of ischemic changes using computed tomography (CT). Understanding the relationship between the composition of the carotid plaque and stroke, including the prediction of the patient's outcome, can significantly help to deeper understanding of its role in the development of cerebrovascular events and enable the improvement of risk assessment in patients with carotid atherosclerosis so that the risk of stroke with subsequent severe disability can be prevented.
