| Anotation | Regular physical activity is a key element of non-pharmacological treatment for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Over time, due to growing evidence based on EBM and advances in neuroscience, the principles of physical activity have changed significantly. Earlier recommendations for a strict resting regimen have been abandoned, and it has been shown that movement does not lead to worsening of the disease course or more frequent attacks. In contrast, recent research has focused on the evaluation of vigorous physical activity. The benefits of physical activity in MS patients are unquestionable, and there is even bold talk of its positive impact in terms of primary prevention. Among the main difficulties of MS patients that are difficult to address pharmacologically is fatigue. This can cause reduced mobility, weaken paretic limbs and contribute to a general decline in fitness. Conversely, improvements in physical fitness in the long term have been shown to reduce the subjective perception of fatigue. The communication of a new diagnosis in terms of a chronic incurable disease may evoke the development or worsening of depression in patients and thus affect their appetite for exercise. These two symptoms often significantly affect the quality of life of people with demyelinating disease. |
