The Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Ostrava announces a job vacancy

  • VP3 Leader/Excellent Worker 2 on the LERCO project
    (In the case of an applicant with the academic title of doc./prof. recognizable in the Czech Republic, it may also include an appropriate academic position as an associate professor/full professor at the Department of Physics)


The open vacancy is announced within the framework of the Life Environment Research Center Ostrava (LERCO, reg. no. CZ.10.03.01/00/22_003/0000003), Research Program 3 (Modeling and Simulation), Main Activity 3 (Molecular Modeling).

Expected start date

  • 1st of January, 2024 (or by agreement)

Estimated amount of work

  • 50 % (or by agreement)

Qualifications and other requirements

  • University education at the III. level, at least 10 years of experience in research
  • Ph.D. in the field of chemical physics, physical chemistry, biophysics, structural biology, or a related field (in the case of Ph.D. degree obtain abroad, recognition of the foreign university degree will be required)
  • English at least at the B2 level
  • EU research level: R3 – Established/R4 – Leading (research group)
  • Long-term achievement of outstanding scientific performance in the field of molecular modeling, computational chemical physics, or biophysics (representation of publications in top journals in the field as the first or corresponding author; as of the start date, at least 50 publications in impact factor journals, at least 2000 citations, and an H-index according to WoS of at least 20)
  • Research using molecular modeling in the areas of biophysics or structural biology is an advantage
  • Willingness to collaborate with VP1 "Molecular Biology and Genomics" and VP2 "Biochemical and Biophysical Methods of Analyzing Biological Systems"
  • Experience in supervising Ph.D. students (at least one successful graduate), possibly master's theses and doctoral study courses
  • Experience in proposing scientific projects (at least two successfully solved projects with a national grant agency or a comparable level as the principal investigator)
  • International experience (documented by at least one-year postdoctoral fellowship at a renowned foreign institution, established international collaboration documented by joint publications)
  • Communication in Czech at least at the B1 level

Job Description / Responsibilities

  • Leading a research team in the field of molecular modeling, determining the direction of research activities
  • Coordinating the scientific activities of other team members for HA3 (Main Activity 3) in Research Program 3 (VP3) of the LERCO project and with foreign researchers
  • Independently solving complex scientific research/development tasks in the field of molecular modeling and development of force fields
  • Initiating and coordinating research projects
  • Active publication activity
  • Responsibility for outputs and fulfillment of indicators in VP3 in HA3
  • Mentoring junior staff and Ph.D. students involved in solving HA3
  • Coordinating collaboration with VP1 "Molecular Biology and Genomics," VP2 "Biochemical and Biophysical Methods of Analyzing Biological Systems," and possibly others

In the case of expanding the position to an academic staff member:

  • Supervising doctoral and master's theses, opposing final theses
  • Leading doctoral study courses, possibly participating in teaching postgraduate courses

The first round of the selection procedure will take place without the personal presence of the candidates by the assessment of the submitted materials by the selecion committee.

The Dean of the Faculty reserves the right to invite only selected candidates to a personal meeting and also the right not to select any candidate. The selection procedure may be cancelled or repeated at the initiative of the Dean of the Faculty.
