Annotation:
A survey of American literature from the colonial period to the late 19th century. Weekly assignments are roughly chronological, but also organized around a number of central themes reflected in literature of the time. These include:
- clashing visions of the American landscape, its meaning and potential;
- religious versus secular outlooks and pursuits of ?virtue?;
- debates over the merits, consequences and future of industrialization;
- the formulation of founding ideals and the search for a national identity;
- attempts to discover a uniquely American ?genius? or literary voice;
- regional and ethnic differences and distinctive styles and dialects;
- transitions from classical to romantic to realist literary modes;
- literature as a vehicle for satire and social protest.
