AnotationThe primary focus of the work is to measure the political value which was associated with determining language/nationalityduring the census in the Czech Lands. Achieving the highest numbers of members of a particular nation was perceived as animportant tool in fights over a political power. The project will show typical conflict situations on central, regional and also onlocal levels which initiated conflicts between the Czechs, Germans and Poles during the census and during the interpretation ofits results. The main bonus of the project is the comparison of the periods of 1890-1910 and 1921-1930. Mainly conflictsbetween nationalities connected with the census up to 1918 have been observed so far, which pointed to the preferentialtreatment of the Germans due to establishing the category of the "communication language". A detailed analysis of the situationafter 1918 has not been performed yet because a substitution of a communion language by a nationality has been considered an overall remedy. The reality is that the core of conflicts was ever in disputes amongst nationalities.
