AnotationMitochondria and plastids possess a translation apparatus inherited from the organelles? eubacterial ancestors. Evolution has generated a tremendous variation in the structural and functional details of organellar translation across the eukaryote diversity, but as also demonstrated by recent work in the applicant?s lab, numerous grey areas or white spots remain in our picture of this evolutionary playground. By joining a team strong in organellar biology, comparative genomics, and genetic code analyses with a co-applicant possessing a unique expertise in molecular modelling and computer simulations of the ribosome, we are perfectly positioned to tackle four selected topics of organellar translation, each documenting a different facet of the evolutionary remodelling of this endosymbiont-derived molecular machinery. Our work will advance the knowledge of organellar translation termination and reading the AUA codon, characterize a newly discovered mitochondrial ribosome-associated protein, and illuminate the evolutionary trajectory of peculiar ribosomes in non-photosynthetic plastids.
