AnotationBody composition is one of the basic indicators of the health state of the organism. It is a more accurate indicator of nutritional status than simply calculating Body Mass Index (BMI). Body composition is influenced by nutrition, physical activity, and genetic predispositions. Muscle (especially striated), adipose tissue, and water are essential parameters for the analysis of human body composition. Body fat is divided into essential, visceral, and subcutaneous. Proper body composition is related to the proper metabolic functions and health of the individual. A high percentage of visceral fat poses a risk of metabolic syndrome. A high percentage of fat mass and lack of muscle mass negatively affect metabolism. Lifestyle, especially proper nutrition and sufficient levels of physical activity influences body composition. Measured body component parameters that are outside the reference range may indicate, for example, a low level of physical activity or inappropriate dietary habits. Sleep is an important modulator of neuroendocrine function and glucose metabolism. Sleep deprivation is thought to lead to metabolic and endocrine changes, in particular, sleep quality and duration are associated with an increased risk of obesity. Even at a young age, assessment of body composition, diet, exercise, and sleep can indicate possible risks of metabolic syndrome or obesity, which is a benefit in preventing the development of these diseases.
