AnotationNatural killer (NK) cells have become a subject of intensive research in recent years in context of their innate abilities in anti-cancer immunity. A broad spectrum of activation and inhibitory molecules is expressed on their surface, which mediate their ability to kill transformed cells or are responsible for effective inhibition of cancer progression. This aspect brought NK cells to the light in the field of cell therapy in hematological and other malignancies. Studies show that tumor microenvironment alters the function of NK cells in favor of tumor cells and one of the described phenomenon is a change in expression of effector surface molecules of NK cells. Similar changes were described not only in solid tumors, but in hematological malignancies too including multiple myeloma, however only in a narrow extent. The aim of the study will be the immunophenotypic characterization of NK cells and monitoring of the most important functional populations together with monitoring of the expression of surface molecules involved in the anticancer immunity, in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients, in 3 different sources (peripheral blood, bone marrow, peripheral blood stem cells) and in different time-points, from the diagnosis to the evaluation of the minimal residual disease (MRD).
