AnotationThis project is concerned with basic research in the calculus of variations and differential geometry, namely in the following areas: (1) Geometric and variational structures on manifolds and applications in physics: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems in jet bundles, nonholonomic constraints; homogeneous variational problems; the inverse problem of the calculus of variations and the geometry of variational equations, and the spectral behaviour of Schrödinger operators where the underlying spaces have nontrivial geometry. (2) General geometric structures and natural bundles: Weil bundles and general prolongation structures, jets and contact elements, Cartan geometries and Lie algebroids, natural and gauge-natural operators, the pseudo-Riemannian geometry of natural bundles, homogeneous geodesics, and holonomy in Lorentzian manifolds. International cooperation will play an important role. New, important results will be obtained. They will be published in respected international mathematical journals and communicated at important international conferences.
