AnotationFungal biofilms possess a degradation potential that so far has not been exploited in remediation. Immobilized cultures of ligninolytic fungi that use non-specific mechanisms of degradation of pollutants can be applied together with the activated sludge process to decompose compounds resisting degradation in wastewater treatment plants. The project focuses on research of fungal biofilms colonizing inert or lignocellulosic materials, that operate over long periods under bacterial stress, and on their structural, biological and biochemical properties. Their capacity of degradation of selected pollutants and removal of heavy metals will be specified and applicability in the form of trickling-bed and rotating disc reactors to remediation of wastewaters examined. Fungal reactors will be designed, their operation optimized and they will be tested in combination with the standard wastewater treatment process for remediation of wastewaters containing recalcitrant pollutants and heavy metals.
