AnotationGIMMS - Gender, Innovation and Mentoring in Mathematics and Science is a Comenius 2.1 project of the European Commission concerned with teacher education and training. The project involves six countries, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Spain and the Czech Republic, and is coordinated by the University of Limerick, Ireland. The project, 2006-2009, comes at a time when decline in interest in the physical sciences is widespread across Europe and there is growing concern about the implications for it's future prosperity and retention of it's competitive edge. There are also socio-cultural implications for citizenship and society in general, with important decisions to be taken with regard to climate change and other significant environmental issues that will affect the future of the planet. Whereas in the early years of the twentieth century an educated person was expected to be a classical scholar, in the early years of the 21st century, an educated person is perceived as someone who has both a classical education and a range of other literacies, including scientific and numerical literacy.
