Substantia nigra pathology detected by transcranial sonography in neurological and psychiatric diseases - systematic review

AnotationThe change in echogenicity found in the substantia nigra (SN) is often associated with Parkinson's disease. However, this sign is seen in other neurological and psychiatric diseases, and additionally in 10% of the healthy population. It is necessary to create a review of diseases that can be characterized by hyperechogenic findings in the SN detected by transcranial sonography (TCS). There is a need to determine the prevalence for neurological and psychiatric diseases that are characterized by the presence of SN hyperechogenicity findings. This systematic review will provide a comprehensive summary for the differential diagnosis of neurological and psychiatric diseases with SN hyperechogenicity, which allows future application of the output of this work to medical practice. The following databases will be used to search the article: Medline OVID SP (EMBASE), Web of Science, SCOPUS, PUBMED. Subsequently, deduplication and review of the article will be performed. Publication screening will be performed by two independent reviewers who will select suitable articles for final analysis and systematic review. In case of any disagreement between the assessors, a third independent expert consultant will have the final decision. Subsequently, the results will be sub-analysed for each selected disease for follow-up research. Aim of the project: Comparison of substantia nigra abnormalities in different neurological and psychiatric diseases. Determination of the prevalence in neurological and psychiatric disorders based on substantia nigra hyperechogenicity.
