AnotationThe aim of the research is to determine the effect of listening to music as a nursing intervention on reducing fear in patients before heart surgery. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in people under the age of 65 in Europe, including the Czech Republic (SZÚ, 2020). Heart surgery is accompanied by feelings of fear and pain. Fear of pain is the most common concern of patients. Perception of pain affects age, gender, social, cultural and genetic influences (Ševčík, 2008). Nursing care also includes the identification of patient feelings and the emotional and psychological support of patients in postoperative care (Dantas and Aguillar, 2001). Music can be a suitable tool for a nurse to care for the patient's psyche, music is called a universal language and has been used throughout history as a powerful medium for maintaining health, in the healing process, to make one feel physically and mentally good (Murrock and Higgins, 2009). Listening of music is a safe, non-invasive and inexpensive non-pharmacological intervention that reduces pain, depression, anxiety and agitation (Murrock et al., 2016). Attributes of music consist of five elements: rhythm, melody, pitch, harmony, and interval (Alvin, 1975; Bunt, 1994). Music in healthcare is applied in prevention and diagnosis as a form of psychotherapy, in rehabilitation and convalescence (Linka, 1997). Listening to anxioalgolytic music reduces the perception of anxiety and pain (Springe in Wigram, 1996).
