The Faculty of Arts at the University of Ostrava lies at the heart of the city — surrended by famous ladnmarks such as the Jiří Myron Theatre, the Cathedral of the Divine Saviour or the Masaryk square.

The faculty works closely with a number of departments and research teams. There is active research work underway in the lower part of the faculty’s building, including the activities of doctorands, who create, write, and conduct research here.

Future prospects

The Faculty of Arts is developing dynamically. In addition to the current facilities, an extensive reconstruction of the second part of the building is planned, which will push the faculty’s environment even closer to the modern standards and greater comfort.

Numerous fields connected by a shared goal

The Faculty brings together a wide range of scientific fields that complement and inspire one another.

The Department of Biology and Ecology offers a cross-section of fundamental fields of biology — from molecular genetics and ecotoxicology to botany and zoology. Our researchers take part in prestigious projects that connect detailed laboratory research with nature conservation.

The Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology focuses on field research, data collection, laboratory analyses, and the development of measures that help landscapes respond to current environmental challenges. Their work has a direct impact on nature conservation and sustainable development.

The Department of Physics connects theory with practice through biophysical experiments and the modeling of nanomaterials. We work with state-of-the-art technology and high-performance computing to asnwer questions of contemporary science and technology.

The Department of Chemistry searches for new innovative ways how to use traditional chemical substances and compounds. It focuses on the development of new materials and their environmental application, which find practical use in real world settings.

The Department of Mathematics and the Department of Informatics and Computer Management connect abstract theory with technological solutions. They focus on mathematical modeling, programming, software development, and data analysis — fields which are crucial for modern science and innovation.

The Department of Human Geography and Regional Development maps the world around us. It focuses on developing strategies for cities and municipalities, analysing regional, political, and cultural development, as well as finding ways for sustainable spatial planning.

Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling of the University of Ostrava is a high-class research workplace with a long-term focus on theoretical and applied research in fuzzy modeling, artificial intelligence, and advanced mathematical methods. Our strength lies in connecting deep theories with practical applications across fields.

Theoretical research as a solid foundation for innovation

There are four research groups active at the Institute whose work focuses primarly on theoretical research. This research provides a stable foundation for the development of new methods and improvement of existing approaches that prove successful in engineering, finance, medicine, biology, and many other fields. Our theoretical results aren’t autotelic – they serve as a stepping stone for the addressing complex issues in today’s world.

Applied research with major impact

In addition to the theoretical research at the institute, there are three research laboratories focused primarily on applied research. They work on the development of new methods and the improvement of the efficiency of existing approaches, for example in the field of innovative techniques for training generative artificial intelligence models.

The laboratories cooperate closely with academic institutions and industrial partners, contribute to the solution of real, often highly complex problems. The result is a large portfolio of applied projects with a direct practical impact.

Doctoral studies and the education of new generation of scientists

The Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling isn’t a typical educational facility for of bachelor’s and master’s programmes students. However, it serves as a guarantor for selected programmes at the Department of Mathematics and for the doctoral programme in Applied informatics at the Department of Informatics and Computers at the University of Ostrava.

It’s also a guarantor of the doctoral programme in Informatics at the Silesian University.

The institute is home to experienced educators who guide doctorands interested in leading research under the auspices of the University of Ostrava, creating an inspiring environment for their professional growth.
