The University of Ostrava will begin construction of new student dormitories with the help of the Moravian-Silesian Region and the City of Ostrava

The Moravian-Silesian Region and the City of Ostrava will co-finance the University of Ostrava's new student dormitories. The Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by Josef Bělica, Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region; Jan Dohnal, Mayor of Ostrava; and Petr Kopecký, Rector of the University of Ostrava.

The number of study programmes at the University of Ostrava are increasing, while the number of students commuting to Ostrava from other parts of the Czech Republic and even from abroad is growing. However, the University of Ostrava does not currently have enough facilities to accommodate all these students. It has therefore prepared a project for the construction of new student dormitories.

Petr Kopecký, Rector of the University of Ostrava, has stated that as the university continues to grow, there are more students in need of accommodation in Ostrava. He noted that the need for suitable dormitories with sufficient capacity is becoming urgent and needs to be addressed. He also expressed gratitude that both the regional and the city authorities have listened to their concerns and committed to providing financial support for the construction.

The construction on the site of the current Jan Opletal Halls of Residence, also known as Hladnov dormitories, is another major project planned by the University of Ostrava. The estimated cost of the new accommodation facilities for students is approximately 1 billion CZK. About 575 million is being funded by a subsidy programme from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. In addition, the Moravian-Silesian Region and the City of Ostrava are providing 90 million CZK each. The remaining funds will be provided by the University of Ostrava through a loan from the National Development Bank of the Czech Republic, which is expected to be supported by a grant from the European Commission (request in progress). Construction of the new student dormitories is scheduled to begin in 2025.
