2. Colorectal Surgery

3. Vascular Surgery

Vascular Surgery provides complex diagnostics and treatment within reconstructive vascular surgery. It combines surgical procedures with modern interventional angiography procedures (hybrid procedures).

4. Mamology

Mamology provides professional care for patients with malignant and non-malignant diseases of mammary gland. That includes treatment and follow-up. Using the detection of sentinel node, the therapy of patients with breast malignant tumors and also skin cancer (melanoblastoma) was significantly improved.

5. Hepatobiliary Surgery

Hepatobiliary Surgery High incidence of colorectal carcinoma in the Czech Republic also indicates high rate of patients with liver metastases. These patients could profit from operative treatment. Every patient is treat within “tailor-made therapy” and his state is regularly discussed within mutual multidisciplinary meetings with oncologists, pathologists and radiologists. Open approach or in special cases also laparoscopic approach could be offered to the patients.

6. Pediatric Surgery

Pediatric Surgery provides extensive professional care for children patients. The main attention is focused on treatment of congenital anomalies including new born operations and acute conditions, acute abdomen and injuries treatment.

7. Thoracic Surgery

Thoracic Surgery provides extensive spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic thoracic procedures, including mini-invasive procedures, mediastinoscopy and thoracoscopy, which leads to better postoperative progress.

Characteristics of the Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery of the University Hospital Ostrava and the University of Ostrava Faculty of Medicine provides complex medical care for adult and children patients. It secures both basic and mainly specialized and superspecialized care for patients from the city of Ostrava and the whole region.

Around 3500 operations is performed at the Department of Surgery every year. An attention is aimed at diagnostics and treatment of the surgical and oncosurgical diseases, hepatic issues, colorectal and thoracic surgery. The Department of Surgery of the University hospital of Ostrava and the University of Ostrava Faculty of Medicine provides full surgical treatment of oesophagus, stomach, gall bladder and biliary tract, liver and pancreas diseases. Significant number of patients consists of those with malignant and non-malignant diseases of small intestine, colon and rectum. Endocrinological diseases surgical treatment is also routinely performed here including thyroid operations and mini-invasive techniques operations of the adrenal gland.

he department is dominantly focused on mini-invasive surgery and The Department of Surgery of the University Hospital Ostrava belongs to internationally respected departments in this area. It is also national and European training center. Using modern devices and instruments the complex spectrum of mini-invasive operations including the most complicated procedures is routinely performed here. That includes the hernia repairs, gall bladder operations, colon operations, gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment, spleen operations, adrenal gland removal and thoracoscopic procedures. The surgical treatment of obesity is also important part of the complex care at the clinic. This includes not only routinely performed sleeve resections but also by-pass operations. The extensive surgical procedures such as large oncological operations are also mostly performed using mini-invasive techniques. This includes for example the laparoscopic oesophagus removal or laparoscopic operations of stomach, colon and rectum. The transanal endoscopic microsurgery also extends the spectrum of rectal diseases treatment possibilities. The laparoscopy is also extensively used in hepatic surgery and the clinic endeavours to propagate this modern procedure together with other top departments in the Czech Republic.
