Annotation:The course provides a general overview of the current knowledge, theories, hypotheses, and open questions concerning the evolutionary history of the basic building block of life, i.e. cells. The course attempts to synthesize the broad and quicly developing primary and secondary literaure from the fields of comparative genomics, cell and molecular biology, phylogenomics, microbiology, protistology, and evolutionary biology with the aim to present a comprehensive and an up-to-date overview of the most important aspects of the evolution of cells and their main subsystems. Apart presenting generalized concepts, the course presents specific case studies from the current literature to demonstrate methodic and methodological background of the presented facts and to point to interpretation problems of current views and theories.
