Annotation:The course will elaborate on the Russian geopolitical thinking, geopolitical culture and their historical origins. The consolidation of the Muscovite kingdom will serve as the historical point of departure, which will be followed by the discussion on the unprecedented territorial expansion of Russian territory. This changing geographical reality was followed by changes of self-consciousness of the Russian state and society: new geopolitical imagination, new practical geopolitics, cultural dilemmas and security challenges. The course will elaborate about great metaphors and founding myths in different historical contexts. Development of key currents of geopolitical thought and geopolitical traditions in 19. Century will be discussed as well as the geopolitical development of the USSR. The key emphases of the course will be located in post-soviet Russia, with the emphasis to the period of the presidency of V. Putin. Contemporary geopolitical schools will be discussed and this knowledge will be connected with current foreign policy of Russian federation, its challenges and dilemmas.
