Overview
The English Philology programme is designed to educate graduates with an advanced level of language competence (CEFR level C1 – “proficient user”), who are capable of communicating in English in various communicative contexts and in various types of institutions. The programme helps students deepen their linguistic competence and expertise in all key areas of English studies. Students will broaden and extend research skills that will help them complete the final-year Master's thesis project.
Aims and Course Design
All the courses offered as part of the degree are taught in English, and communication with students (both at the department and faculty level) will likewise be in English. The structure, content and extent of the follow-on Master's degree “English Philology” follows on directly from the English-language version of the three-year Bachelor's degree “English Philology”. The follow-on Master's degree “English Philology” is a philological programme which requires candidates to possess an advanced level of language competence (CEFR level C1 – “proficient user”), a very good knowledge of the grammatical and lexical systems of modern English, an awareness of the characteristic features of functional styles, a basic awareness of the literature of English-speaking countries, and a general knowledge of these countries' culture and history. This knowledge and these skills are further developed and enhanced in the follow-on Master's degree. In linguistics, students' knowledge of the modern English language is complemented by a knowledge of historical grammar and diachronic language change; there is an extensive focus on higher levels of language and features of linguistic communication (text linguistics, linguistic pragmatics, sociolinguistics); and there is also an emphasis on a contrastive approach (linguistic interference). In literature, students acquire a deeper knowledge primarily of modern British and American literature, while also broadening their horizons to encompass literary criticism.
Graduate Profile and Career Opportunities
The aim of the degree is to ensure that graduates attain an expert level of philological knowledge and are experienced, independent users of the English language (CEFR level C2), with a solid knowledge of English linguistics and of the literatures and cultures of English-speaking countries; this knowledge and these skills can be applied by graduates in a wide range of professions requiring independent intellectual work and expertise in the above-mentioned areas. Graduates are highly competent users of the English language in both written and spoken forms, applying their language skills in formal and informal situations of various types. Graduates are able to independently and creatively apply their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in carrying out expert tasks, intellectual work and research; they are also able to systematically develop their skills and knowledge depending on practical requirements. Besides working professionally with language and texts of various types, graduates also possess a high degree of cultural erudition, which can be effectively applied in intercultural communication and international cooperation.

Careers
As an English Philology Master degree graduate you will develop advanced critical, analytical and communication skills which enable you to pursue two possible paths: to continue your studies in our doctoral programme, or to enter the labour market. Our recent graduates have entered careers as diverse as tourism, the media, publishing, international relations, translating and interpreting, industry and commerce, and further studies.
General requirements
We warmly welcome students from all over the world, and we carefully assess all applications on an individual basis.
Candidates are expected to possess an excellent level of language competence (level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in all language skills (pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, speaking and listening, reading comprehension, writing skills) and a sound knowledge of basic linguistic disciplines, the structure and systems of the English language, the development of British and American literature, as well as the life, culture and institutions of English-speaking countries.
The admissions procedure does not include an entrance examination. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of:
- their submitted certificate of language proficiency. Applicants must submit an IELTS Academic or ToEFL iBT language proficiency certificate proving that their proficiency in the English language reaches at least level C1 (in the CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
- a portfolio which will include:
- a structured letter of motivation, in English (2,500 characters including spaces); in the letter, applicants must describe their relevant interests and experience beyond their Bachelor studies;
- a structured summary of the applicant's Bachelor thesis, in English (2,500 characters including spaces). If the elaboration and defence of a Bachelor thesis was not a requirement for the completion of the applicant's previous studies, the applicant must submit a paper (an essay of 2,500 characters) on a specialist topic from the applicant's previous studies.
Criteria for evaluation
- The IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT language proficiency certificate proving proficiency to at least level C1 must include the points score as per the following table:
The certificate of the IELTS test (Test Report Form – TRF) or the TOEFL score report needs to be sent directly by the testing centre to the e-mail address , or, if applicant have already received the certificate, she/he needs to submit a copy of the certificate to the above-mentioned e-mail address as soon as possible.Points scores for IELTS and TOEFL CEFR IELTS Academic TOEFL iBT C1 at least 6.5 at least 90 at least 6.0 in each part at least 20 in each part - Evaluation of the applicant's portfolio as stipulated in the attachement no. 2 of the Conditions for admissiion.
Tuition fees
We charge tuition fees for every year of your study.
The tuition fee is € 2,000 per year.
Admission requirements – you need to:
- Submit the application to study and pay the administrative fee for the admissions procedure.
- Get the language proficiency certificate.
- Submit a structured motivation letter and your bachelor thesis summary of the required lenth.
- Obtain an official document proving your previous education as stipulated by the Conditions for admission, art. 3.
For a consecutive (follow-on) Master's degree programme, full completion of studies in at least a Bachelor's degree programme. If you completed the previous education in a foreign country (outside the Czech Republic), we recommend that you submit the Application for The Recognition of Foreign Education to the University of Ostrava – see Foreign Transcripts.
We strongly recommend that applicants submit the required documents as soon as possible due to the complexity of the visa application process.

After entering the e-application system and login via the email address, applicant selects the study programme and follows the instructions of the application. The last step of submission the e-application is the payment of the application fee of 560 CZK. It is recommended that applicant pay the fee by card.
